Nya kameror från Canon och ARRI

Efter många års eftersläp släpper nu Canon nu äntligen tapeless kameror.

Modellerna XF305 och XF300 kan ses som direkta ersättare av den befintliga XH-A1. XF305 kommer agera som en pro-utrustad version där både HD-SDI samt Genlock ingår, båda modellerna kommer utrustade med XLR kontakt.

Tyvärr släppte inte Canon det efterlängtade formatet 1080/60p som många hoppats på utan går i linje med Sonys HXR-NX5E och kommer ligga i segmentet under Sonys XDCAM EX serie.
I dagsläget verkar det som om den stora skillnaden mellan Canon och Sonys nya modeller är codec vs ljusstyrka. Canon har ett mpeg-2 codec på maximalt 50mbit medans Sony använder sig istället av ett AVCHD codec (som ex Panasonics HMC-151). Sonys kamera verkar dock ha en ljuskänslighet en bra bit högre än Canon.

I relaterade nyheter meddelar ARRI att de går in i kampen mot RED vilket inte var en dag för sent! ALEXA kommer vara ARRI´s svar på RED ProRes inspelning och meddelas vara ett direkt svar på Hollywoods efterfrågan.

"When you're shooting incredibly hi-res video with a camera like the RED ONE, you end up with extremely large and processing-heavy files that take a certain amount of finessing to play nice with your editing software. This post-processing can be taxing on both time and resources, both of which cost money and can break a production on a budget. The ALEXA allows you to record compressed 1080p footage in Apple's native ProRes 444 and ProRes 422 (HQ) QuickTime format to readily available SxS cards, which can be instantly ingested and edited in Final Cut with no transcoding necessary. What's more, the camera has the ability to dual record to a compressed format and to its higher-res, 2k ARRIRAW counterpart at the same time, allowing you to rapidly edit in the field and bring the big, high quality footage online later.

The ALEXA also boasts a super 35 CMOS Bayer sensor promising 13.5 stops of dynamic range and plenty of that buttery, out-of-focus shallow depth of field that you'd expect from a major motion picture camera. ARRI's also promises a host of expansion accessories for the camera, from storage modules and advanced recorders, to HD viewfinders and an exchangeable lens mount so you can use your DSLR lenses in addition to the big-time PL-mount movie lenses."

Jim Jannard, RED CEO, graciously responded to the test by saying:

"We have believed, since IBC last year, that these two platforms would be the ones standing for the future. We are very proud to be in such good company. But for the moment, we tip our hats to Arri."
